Consultants for Business – Do They Really Help?
I get a lot of questions from business owners about whether they should hire consultants to help them. Here are a few key points to keep in mind…
Know what you want – consultants are not genies or magicians. Good ones can help you see your company and your market clearly, and take actions that help you win. But to help you, they need to know what your desired outcome is. Knowing you have a problem or want help but not knowing anything specific about it will just waste the consultant’s time and your money.
Choose between knowing and doing – many consultants only provide you advice, and then it’s up to you to use it. However, some consultants will actually handle implementation of their recommendations also. Go with this type for 2 reasons–first, you have the possibility of offloading the work if you find the recommendations are great but you can’t implement them yourself. And second, you know the advice they give you is based on real world experience so it’s more likely to get the results you want. (anyone can give you a bunch of theories if they don’t need to prove them.)
Start small – the best way to engage consultants is to start with a small project or piece of what you want done so you can get a feel for their effectiveness. Once you feel comfortable you’ll get the results you want, you can move on to bigger projects with confidence.
Consultants for business can be a tremendous resource, IF you use them correctly.
